Doom: The Dark Ages – A Return to Brutal Roots
Following the critically acclaimed Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal, id Software is shifting gears with Doom: The Dark Ages, a prequel that ditches the platforming elements of its predecessor in favor of a more grounded, power-focused combat experience. While the signature arsenal returns, including the skull-crushing new weapon showcased in the reveal trailer, the focus shifts to enhanced melee combat. Players will wield an electrified gauntlet, a flail, and the standout Shield Saw, offering strategic options for blocking, parrying, and deflecting attacks. Game director Hugo Martin emphasizes a "stand and fight" approach.
Martin cites inspiration from the original Doom, Frank Miller's Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, and Zack Snyder's 300 as key influences. This is reflected in the game's design, featuring large-scale combat encounters reminiscent of 300's epic battles. The Glory Kill system has been overhauled, allowing for dynamic finishing moves from any angle. Level design emphasizes exploration and freedom, with shorter, more focused levels (approximately one hour each).
Addressing criticisms of Doom Eternal, The Dark Ages presents its narrative through cutscenes rather than in-game codex entries. The story promises a large-scale adventure, described as a "summer blockbuster event," focusing on the Slayer's power and the threats against him. Control schemes have been simplified for improved intuitiveness, and melee weapons are equipped individually. The game features a streamlined economy with a single currency (gold), and secrets reward skill progression with tangible gameplay enhancements.
Difficulty is customizable via sliders, allowing players to fine-tune aspects like game speed and enemy aggression. The impressive giant demon mech (Atlan) and cybernetic dragon riding sequences from the trailer are not one-off events, each offering unique abilities and mini-boss encounters. Importantly, The Dark Ages will not feature a multiplayer mode, allowing the developers to fully concentrate on the single-player experience.
Martin emphasizes a deliberate departure from Doom Eternal, aiming for a return to the core principles of the original Doom. The goal is to deliver a powerful yet distinct experience, drawing inspiration from the classic while offering a fresh take on the formula. The game's May 15th release date is highly anticipated.
