Ghost of Yotei promises to be the most expansive and free-roaming game ever crafted by Sucker Punch. Dive deeper into what the game offers and how it authentically captures Japanese culture.
In a revealing interview with Famitsu on April 24, Sucker Punch unveiled exciting details about their latest addition to the Ghost series, Ghost of Yotei. Building on the success of the critically acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima, this standalone sequel enriches both its narrative depth and gameplay mechanics.
Creative Director Jason Cornell highlighted that Ghost of Yotei will offer unparalleled gameplay freedom and feature the studio's most expansive maps to date. He emphasized the non-linear approach to the game's main objective, stating, "Players can discover the locations of the Yotei Six at their own pace and choose how to avenge them."
Last week, the excitement was further fueled with the announcement of Ghost of Yotei's PS5 release date and the debut of a new trailer titled "The Onryō’s List." This trailer provided glimpses into the story and gameplay, introducing fans to the protagonist Atsu and her quest for vengeance against the Yotei Six.
In addition to its expansive exploration, Ghost of Yotei expands players' arsenal. Speculation from the latest trailer about new weapons was confirmed by Sucker Punch Creative Director Nate Fox. Alongside the iconic samurai sword, players can now wield the odachi (Japanese long sword), a chain sickle, dual swords, and a spear.
Fox stressed the samurai sword's centrality to the gameplay, yet highlighted the freedom to learn and master other weapons from various in-game teachers and masters. He noted, "Atsu's combat isn't bound by samurai honor, allowing her to utilize whatever's available on the battlefield." This includes picking up and using weapons dropped by defeated enemies, with Fox adding, "It's limited to certain weapons, but if you can manage it, you can wield it effectively."
Set in 1603 around Mt. Yotei in Ezo (modern-day Hokkaido), Ghost of Yotei explores a setting that, as described by Cornell, "blends a lawless environment with the natural dangers of an untamed wilderness."
The game will also showcase the Ainu culture and its people, an indigenous group from northern Japan. Sucker Punch's dedication to authenticity led them to conduct extensive research in Hokkaido, visiting museums and consulting with Ainu culture experts. Cornell was inspired by Hokkaido's stunning landscapes, aiming to bring this natural beauty to the global audience.
Following the footsteps of Ghost of Tsushima, which was lauded for its respectful portrayal of Japanese culture and history, Ghost of Yotei aims to maintain this high standard, showcasing "the perilous beauty of Ezo's wilderness."
Ghost of Yotei is set to launch exclusively on PlayStation 5 on October 2, 2025. Stay tuned for more updates by following our dedicated coverage!
