CD Projekt Red is setting a new standard for non-playable character (NPC) development in The Witcher 4. Following feedback on Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3, the studio aims to create a truly immersive world populated by believable and engaging characters.

Game director Sebastian Kalemba explained their new approach: “Our rule is: every NPC should seem to be living their own life, with their own story.”

This commitment is evident in the first trailer, showcasing the village of Stromford. Villagers adhere to unique superstitions, worshipping a forest deity. A scene depicts a girl praying in the woods until Ciri arrives to battle a monster.

Kalemba further emphasized their dedication to realism: “We aim for maximum realism in NPCs – from appearance and facial expressions to their behavior. This will create deeper immersion than ever before. We're setting a new benchmark for quality.”

The developers intend to imbue each village and character with distinctive traits and narratives, reflecting the cultural nuances and beliefs of isolated communities.

The Witcher 4's 2025 release date has fans eagerly anticipating further details on this innovative approach to world and character building.
