Bloodborne Demake Faces Copyright Woes; 60fps Mod Creator Shares Hope

Sony's copyright claims against Bloodborne fan projects are intensifying. Following last week's takedown of the Bloodborne 60fps mod by Lance McDonald, Lilith Walther's Bloodborne PSX demake has now been targeted. A YouTube video showcasing the demake received a copyright claim from MarkScan Enforcement, a company reportedly hired by Sony. McDonald confirmed MarkScan's involvement, noting they were also responsible for the DMCA takedown of his 60fps patch.

This aggressive action from Sony comes amidst significant fan activity surrounding Bloodborne. Recent breakthroughs in PS4 emulation, allowing for a near-remaster experience at 60fps on PC, have fueled speculation. While Sony remains silent, McDonald suggests a "copium theory"—that the DMCA actions are a preemptive move to clear the way for an official 60fps remake or remaster. This theory posits that Sony aims to avoid trademark conflicts with existing fan projects.

Former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida offered his perspective, suggesting that Hidetaka Miyazaki's deep personal attachment to Bloodborne, coupled with his current workload, prevents him from allowing others to work on a remaster or sequel. Yoshida emphasized this was merely a personal theory, not leaked information.

Despite Miyazaki's past comments acknowledging the game's suitability for modern hardware, Bloodborne remains unreleased on newer platforms, leaving fans yearning for an official next-gen update, remaster, or even a sequel. The situation highlights the ongoing tension between fan creativity and IP rights, particularly surrounding beloved but neglected titles.
