The producer of Mario Kart World revealed it was initially crafted for the original Nintendo Switch. Discover the game’s development journey and the adaptations made for its transition to Switch 2.

Mario Kart World, the latest in the beloved racing series, launches with Nintendo Switch 2. Its development began in 2017, alongside work on Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
In Nintendo’s Ask the Developer series, published May 21, the Mario Kart World team shared the game’s origins. Producer Kosuke Yabuki explained that prototyping started in March 2017, with full development launching by year’s end. Having refined the series’ formula in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, the team aimed to create something grander.
Yabuki also clarified why the game isn’t titled Mario Kart 9, despite expectations. The team’s vision extended beyond adding new tracks; they sought to elevate the series entirely, opting for a fresh title. “We incorporated ‘Mario Kart World’ into the concept art from the outset,” Yabuki noted.

Programming Director Kenta Sato shared that the shift to Switch 2 was considered in 2020. Initially, the team relied on estimated specs for the next-gen console, only later accessing development units. “We worked with rough projections until then,” Sato said.
The team needed to ensure their ambitious vision matched the hardware’s capabilities. Sato noted, “While the original Switch could handle many games, our expansive world wouldn’t maintain 60 fps without compromises.”
Once Switch 2’s specs were clear, the team’s concerns eased. “We realized we could exceed our initial goals,” Sato said, excited by the possibilities.
However, the upgrade required enhanced assets. Art Director Masaaki Ishikawa explained that visuals needed greater detail. The art team embraced the opportunity, relieved to have more creative freedom.
Developing for Switch 2 allowed richer environments, like denser terrain and enhanced visuals, previously limited by the original Switch’s performance.

Fans were thrilled to see Cow as a playable character in the trailer, a first for the series. Previously a background figure or obstacle, Cow now takes the wheel.
Ishikawa revealed that each Mario Kart game introduces a new racer. “A designer’s playful sketch of Cow racing sparked the idea,” he said, laughing. “It felt surprisingly natural.” This opened possibilities for future NPC racers, enriching the game’s interconnected world.

Beyond new characters, the team focused on creating a cohesive world. Diverse food elements, terrain-adaptive karts, and dynamic tracks enhance the experience.
With excitement building, fans eagerly await Mario’s return in this expansive racing adventure. Nintendo is set to launch one of its flagship franchises with Switch 2.
