Kojima Eyes Film Direction After Completing PlayStation Game Physint in 5-6 Years

Hideo Kojima's much-anticipated spiritual successor to Metal Gear, Physint, is still a significant wait away, with the acclaimed developer estimating another "five or six years" before its release. In an interview with Le Film Francais, Kojima shared that his dream of directing a movie is on hold until he completes this new "action espionage" game, marking his first major project in this genre since his high-profile departure from Konami in 2015.

Kojima has been inundated with offers since founding his independent studio, and alongside Physint, he's also working on Death Stranding 2. "Besides Death Stranding 2, there's also Physint in development. That will take me another five or six years," he stated, as translated by ResetEra member Red Kong XIX. The director expressed a desire to delve into filmmaking as a tribute to cinema, which he grew up with, adding, "I'm getting older, and I'd prefer to do it while I'm still young!"

PlayStation Studios boss Herman Hulst first announced Physint in January 2024, but updates have been scarce since. Initially, Kojima hinted that Physint might also be a movie, but he later clarified on X/Twitter that while it would incorporate elements akin to a film, such as advanced storytelling, casting, and visuals, it would primarily be a game within the realm of "Digital Entertainment."

Kojima Productions is juggling multiple projects, including Death Stranding 2 and a new IP, OD, developed in collaboration with Xbox Game Studios and featuring actress Hunter Schafer and filmmaker Jordan Peele. Additionally, A24 is working on a film adaptation of the original Death Stranding.

Death Stranding 2: On The Beach is slated for release next month on June 26. Actor Norman Reedus, who stars in the franchise, recently hinted to IGN that he would reprise his role in the upcoming film adaptation, stating, "of course" he would play himself.

In a fascinating revelation last week, Kojima shared that he has left behind a USB stick filled with game ideas for his staff to explore after his passing. This follows his recent disclosure of several discarded game concepts, including an intriguing 'Forgetting Game' where the protagonist's memories and abilities fade if the player takes too long a break.
