Poncle Discusses Film Adaptation Hurdles: 'No Plot in Game'

Vampire Survivors developer Poncle has shared insights into the challenges of adapting their hit game into a film, despite it originally being announced as an animated series. In a recent Steam post, Poncle confirmed they are "still working with Story Kitchen on a live action film," acknowledging the complexities involved in transforming a game with "no plot" into a cinematic experience.

The core difficulty, as Poncle points out, lies in the game's simplicity and lack of narrative. Vampire Survivors is a mechanically straightforward action game centered around defeating hordes of enemies. Poncle emphasized the importance of finding the right partners and ideas to bring the game to life in a new medium, stating, "rather than jumping the gun and make stuff for the sake of making it, we have preferred to wait to find partners that felt right, especially because to make anything that isn't a video game out of Vampire Survivors requires good ideas, creativity, and that quirky knowledge of the game."

Poncle humorously noted the irony of adapting a game with no plot, sarcastically commenting, "the most important thing in Vampire Survivors is the story." The developer admits that the absence of a clear narrative makes it challenging to predict how the film will turn out, which they see as part of the excitement of the project.

Vampire Survivors has become a standout indie success since its launch on Steam, known for its fast-paced gothic horror and rogue-lite elements. Players can choose from 50 characters and 80 weapons, with the game expanding through two major expansions and the Ode to Castlevania DLC. IGN's 8/10 review praised the game for its deceptive simplicity and depth, noting it as an ideal companion for podcast listeners despite some dull periods when players get ahead of the game's curve.
