PC players of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered encountered unexpected issues following a surprise update released today. Bethesda has acknowledged the problem and assured fans that a fix is on the way.
The update, which was deployed without prior notice or patch notes by Virtuos, the game's re-release developer, left many players puzzled. While some continued playing without immediate issues, others quickly discovered that the update caused significant problems, particularly with the game's upscaling features.
Yoooo why would @virtuosgames push an update to Oblivion Remastered that removes all upscaling right before the game's first weekend?!!?

A Reddit user reported being unable to adjust upscaling settings, which were locked to 'off' despite attempts to change them. This led to extended loading times and reduced frame rates, even on high-end hardware. "Now I am stuck with 40-60 fps in high settings with a 5800X3D and a 5080. Nice patch :D," the user remarked.
The community's reaction has been mixed, with some players unaffected, while others are struggling with performance issues, particularly related to low framerates. The unexpected removal of upscaling options has also left many fans frustrated as they head into Oblivion Remastered's first weekend.
Bethesda has responded to the outcry with a statement on their official support page, explaining that the update was meant to include "a few backend tweaks and nothing directly impacting gameplay." However, it appears that players using the Microsoft Store version are primarily affected, with issues related to upscaling and anti-aliasing settings.
"Any graphic settings adjusted prior to the Microsoft Store hotfix are still enabled and function normally," Bethesda clarified. "However, you will temporarily be unable to adjust those settings due to the issue with the settings UI. The team is taking a look and working out a resolution, we will share more info as soon as we can."
While a timeline for the fix remains uncertain, players on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X | S consoles are reportedly unaffected and can continue enjoying the game without issues.
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion was remastered and released for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X | S earlier this week. For deeper insights into Bethesda and Virtuos' approach to this re-release, explore why they aimed to maintain the original game's jank and why some players still cherish it years later.
