Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2's Phenomenal Debut: A Million Copies Sold in a Day

A Resounding Success Across Platforms

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 (KCD2) has experienced a spectacular launch, achieving both impressive sales figures and overwhelmingly positive critical reception across all platforms. Warhorse Studios proudly announced on Twitter (now X) that the game surpassed one million copies sold within 24 hours of its February 4, 2025 release. This achievement significantly outpaces its predecessor, which required over nine days to reach the same milestone.

SteamDB data reveals a concurrent player count exceeding 176,285 within a six-hour period, eclipsing KCD1's all-time peak of 96,069. Furthermore, KCD2 secured a prominent position, ranking 12th among all PlayStation games in the U.S. on the PlayStation Store homepage at the time of reporting.

OpenCritic awarded KCD2 a "Mighty" rating, boasting an impressive score of 89 and a 97% critic recommendation rate.

Addressing Critical Backlash

Despite the largely positive response, KCD2 hasn't been without its detractors. Creative Director Daniel Vávra engaged with some negative reviews on Twitter (X), addressing criticisms from certain outlets that found the gameplay experience tedious or overly demanding. These lower-than-average scores impacted the overall OpenCritic aggregate rating, prompting Vávra's public response and commentary on journalistic standards.

Online Controversy and Community Response

Vávra also actively countered online attacks targeting KCD2's inclusion of same-sex romance options. He publicly challenged negative Metacritic user reviews labeling the game as "historically inaccurate DEI" (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion). He encouraged fans to review the game and report any instances of bot-generated negative comments on review platforms.

He reiterated that the LGBTQ+ content is entirely optional, emphasizing player agency and choice within the expansive open-world medieval setting. KCD2 offers players considerable freedom in how they experience the RPG.
