Avowed's Success Spurs Talk of Expansions and Sequels

Following the successful launch of Avowed, Obsidian and Microsoft are reportedly pleased with sales figures. This positive reception has led to discussions about the future of the franchise, including potential expansions or a sequel.

In a recent Bloomberg interview (February 22, 2025), Avowed Game Director Carrie Patel expressed her strong desire to continue working within the established world. While no official plans have been announced, Patel stated, "Now that we’ve built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I’d love to see us do more with it," hinting at her enthusiasm for future projects.

A Challenging Development Journey

Patel also shared insights into the complex development process of Avowed. The project, initiated in 2018 amidst Obsidian's acquisition by Microsoft, faced numerous hurdles. Initial plans were significantly altered, including the removal of multiplayer features and a streamlining of functionalities. A leadership change and game reboot in January 2021 further reshaped the project's trajectory. Patel highlighted the challenges of managing a large team ("Normally if you’re stepping back and reevaluating your creative direction...you would do that with a very small team"), emphasizing the eventual cohesion of the team's efforts. The final product strongly emphasizes the lore and narrative established in the Pillars of Eternity franchise, incorporating open zones instead of a fully open world.

Pillars of Eternity Tactics on the Horizon?

The resurgence of the Pillars of Eternity franchise with Avowed has sparked interest in a new direction: a tactics game. During a Twitch livestream (February 23, 2025), Pillars of Eternity Director Josh Sawyer revealed that a "Pillars: Tactics" game is a possibility, though challenges remain in determining scope, visual quality, and overall scale. While Sawyer remains committed to developing Pillars of Eternity 3 (with a proposed budget comparable to Baldur's Gate 3), the success of Avowed has undoubtedly increased the likelihood of exploring the tactics genre within the Pillars of Eternity universe.
