Path of Exile 2 Expeditions: A Comprehensive Guide

Path of Exile 2 introduces Expeditions, a revamped endgame system from previous leagues. This guide details how to initiate and optimize Expeditions, navigate the detonation mechanic, utilize the passive skill tree, and maximize rewards. Four major endgame events—Delirium, Breaches, Rituals, and Expeditions—await in the Atlas map. Expeditions, marked by a light blue spiral icon on Atlas nodes, can be guaranteed using Expedition Precursor Tablets in completed Lost Tower slots.

Understanding the Expedition Mechanic

Entering an Expedition reveals a zone with markers and four NPCs. The core gameplay involves strategically deploying explosives near markers to trigger events:

  • Red Markers: Detonating explosives near these spawns Runic Monsters. Larger markers yield larger monster packs, enhanced by Unearthed Remnants.
  • Unearthed Remnants: These relics provide beneficial or detrimental modifiers (e.g., increased elemental damage but higher item rarity from chests).
  • Black Markers (Spiral Symbol): Explosives near these spawn Excavated Chests containing Artifacts, Logbooks, currency, Waystones, and high-end gear.

The Explosives UI shows the area of effect (AOE). Avoid overlapping AOE circles for optimal farming. After placing explosives, activate the Detonator. Death resets the map, but you can retreat and return later.

Mastering the Expedition Pinnacle Map

Runic Monsters and Excavated Chests have a chance to drop Expedition Logbooks. These unlock Pinnacle Maps via Dannig in your hideout. Slot the Logbook to open portals leading to significantly larger Expedition events with increased explosives.

These Pinnacle Maps feature Olroth, a challenging boss (indicated by a skull on the minimap). Defeating Olroth grants double Expedition Passive Skill Tree points.

Enhancing Expeditions with the Passive Skill Tree

The Expedition Passive Skill Tree (located in the Atlas Passive Skill Tree menu) offers modifiers to enhance rewards and difficulty. Notable nodes include:

Notable Passive Effect Requirements
Extreme Archaeology Reduces explosives to 1, but boosts radius, placement range, and reduces enemy life. N/A
Disturbed Rest 50% more Runic Monster Flags N/A
Detailed Records 50% more Logbooks, Logbooks always spawn with 3x Modifiers Disturbed Rest
Timed Detonations 50% more Artifacts, faster detonation chains N/A
Legendary Battles 50% more Rare monsters, more Exotic Coinage Timed Detonations
Frail Treasures 3x more Excavated Chest Markers, but they disappear after 5 seconds N/A
Weight of History 35% boost to Remnant effects N/A
Unearthed Anomalies Remnants gain an additional Suffix and Prefix modifier Weight of History

Prioritize "Disturbed Rest," "Detailed Records," and "Timed Detonations" for significant reward boosts. Then consider "Weight of History," "Unearthed Anomalies," and "Legendary Battles" for increased difficulty and rewards. Avoid "Extreme Archaeology" due to its significant reduction in explosives.

Maximizing Expedition Rewards

Artifacts are key rewards, each used with a specific vendor (Gwennen, Tujen, Rog, Dannig) to acquire gear. Exotic Coinage refreshes vendor inventories. Expedition Logbooks unlock Pinnacle Maps and offer a chance to fight Olroth, yielding double passive skill points, high-tier currency, and exclusive uniques. Increasing map difficulty increases Olroth's spawn rate and reward quality.
