Monster Hunter Wilds, the latest installment in Capcom's renowned action series, has finally arrived on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Building on the success of Monster Hunter World and its expansive Iceborne expansion, Wilds promises an engaging experience. But just how long does it take to conquer this beast-filled world? We've gathered insights from various members of the IGN team to provide you with a comprehensive look at the time it takes to complete the main story, their focus during gameplay, and their adventures in the postgame.
I completed the campaign of Monster Hunter Wilds in just under **15 hours**, reaching the actual end of the story. This is different from Monster Hunter Rise, where the first credit roll marks only the halfway point. Completing the campaign signifies the end of Low Rank, but the real challenge begins with High Rank, which offers numerous side quests and tougher battles.
I spent **another 15 hours** tackling almost all of these High Rank quests to reach what feels like the true endgame. By then, I had battled every monster, unlocked all the initial crafting systems, and delved into the custom Artian weapon system, which promises endless engagement. Thanks to Wilds' streamlined grind, it took me just five more hours to optimize my preferred weapons and armor set. However, there's still much more to explore across other weapon types.
I completed the final "story" mission in High Rank at around **40 hours**, approximately **22 hours after the Low Rank credits**. My playtime might not be precise due to time spent idling in menus for guide-related purposes. During the Low Rank portion, I didn't dive deep into the game's systems, crafting only what was necessary and moving forward without repeating hunts. In High Rank, I veered from the main story to engage with optional monsters and hunt with friends, which is essential for unlocking further Story Missions.
I upgraded my weapon once specifically for the final mission by hunting an Ajarakan, but otherwise, I focused on reaching the end swiftly. Given more time, my playtime might have reached closer to 60 hours as I would have crafted a more efficient armor and weapon set. I still have plenty on my to-do list, including catching endemic life, fishing, and completing six monster-hunting Side Missions. There's also an additional optional quest to unlock, and I plan to farm specific monsters for Talisman upgrades, experiment with different armor, and try my luck with Artian weapons. I'll also enjoy replaying the story with friends while mastering a new weapon, not to mention the upcoming event quests and title updates with new monsters.
It took me **just under 16 hours** to finish the main story of Monster Hunter Wilds, which was surprisingly quick compared to my 25-hour journey through Monster Hunter World without reaching the end. As a relative newcomer to the series, I found the battles quite manageable, though some apex predators did challenge me. The streamlined approach to accommodate new players, with less emphasis on elemental strengths, crafting tailored loadouts, and extensive tracking, certainly contributed to the shorter runtime.
The consistent pace of story cutscenes and monster battles until the credits gave it a more cinematic feel, perhaps influenced by Western game design. While this made the story more accessible, it might have diluted some of the traditional Monster Hunter essence until the postgame, where the full depth of the game unfolds.
It took me about **20 hours** to reach the initial credits, most of which was dedicated to completing optional and side quests. I also spent time exploring the world, hunting endemic life, customizing my menus, and finding optimal camp locations. It took me **another 15 hours** to complete all the High Rank missions and see all the post-credit monsters.
So far, I've spent nearly **70 hours** in the post-credits phase, enjoying casual hunts with friends, farming for decorations, and hunting for monster crowns. While I've had a blast so far, I'm eagerly awaiting the addition of new monsters in future updates.
I saw the first credits after about **20 hours**, mostly sticking to the main storyline with brief diversions to craft appealing armor sets and experiment with different weapons, particularly the Switch Axe. My total playtime is now **65 hours**, and I don't consider the credits the true ending. The story feels like an extended tutorial, which is fine by me as there are still many monsters to hunt and new items to craft. Except for Congalala, that's one monster I could do without.
