With the success of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, fans are eagerly anticipating which Bethesda game will be next in line for a remaster. Speculation is rife that Fallout 3 could be the next title to receive this treatment, especially after leaks surfaced in 2023. Bruce Nesmith, a designer on Fallout 3, has highlighted areas where the game could be significantly enhanced, particularly in its gun combat, which he described as "not good."

In an interview with VideoGamer, Nesmith suggested that a Fallout 3 Remastered would feature shooting mechanics more akin to those in Fallout 4. He noted the substantial improvements made to gun combat in Fallout 4, stating, "What did you see in Fallout 4? That will tell you what they felt was necessary to change from Fallout 3." He praised the efforts made in Fallout 4, acknowledging that Fallout 3 was Bethesda's first attempt at a shooter-style game.

Oblivion Remastered, crafted by Virtuos using Unreal Engine 5, has set a high bar with its extensive list of enhancements. Running at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second, it boasts improvements in leveling systems, character creation, combat animations, and in-game menus. Additionally, it includes new dialogue, a refined third-person view, and advanced lip sync technology. These changes have been well-received, with some fans suggesting that Oblivion Remastered is more akin to a remake. Bethesda has clarified their decision to opt for a remaster rather than a full remake.

Nesmith believes that Fallout 3 Remastered would follow a similar path of upgrades as seen in Oblivion Remastered. He pointed out that the combat in Fallout 3 did not compare well to other shooters of its time and anticipated that the improvements seen in Fallout 4 would be integrated into the remaster. He also praised the visual and technical enhancements in Oblivion Remastered, suggesting it could be considered "Oblivion 2.0."

Bethesda is currently juggling multiple projects, including The Elder Scrolls VI, potential expansions for Starfield, ongoing work on Fallout 76, and the Fallout TV series, which is set to explore New Vegas in its second season. This flurry of activity promises exciting developments for fans in the coming years.
