In an insightful interview with Wccftech, the developers of Tides of Annihilation at Eclipse Glow Games discussed the game's unique concept and its appeal to a Western audience. Dive in to uncover the fascinating details and what the future holds for this intriguing title.
During Gamescom 2024, Eclipse Glow Games, a China-based developer studio, sat down with Wccftech to delve into the concept behind Tides of Annihilation. The studio, backed financially by Tencent, explained their decision to adopt a Western setting. "This game and Black Myth: Wukong are two projects invested in by Tencent, with different target markets in mind. While Black Myth: Wukong aimed at the Chinese market, Tides of Annihilation is tailored for Western audiences, leveraging the iconic Arthurian legends," shared the game's producer. The central theme revolves around knights, specifically King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table.
Set in a post-apocalyptic modern-day London, Tides of Annihilation follows the journey of Gwendolyn, seemingly the last human survivor after an Outworld invasion. The game blends modern settings with rich fantasy elements, drawing inspiration directly from Arthurian myths.
Fans of action-RPGs will recognize the combat style in Tides of Annihilation as reminiscent of the iconic Devil May Cry series. The developers confirmed this influence, stating, "It's definitely more like Devil May Cry," but with a user-friendly twist through adjustable difficulty levels. This design choice aims to make the game accessible to a broader audience, including those new to action games.
Players can customize their combat style with four different weapons and enlist the help of over ten unique Knights from the Round Table. Gwendolyn discovers her ability to command these legendary figures, aiding her in navigating the ruins of London to unravel the mystery of the invasion. With over 30 bosses each boasting unique abilities, the game promises challenging and engaging encounters.
Eclipse Glow Games also shared their vision for expanding the Tides of Annihilation universe into an anthology series. The team is exploring the possibility of introducing new settings and mythologies, potentially featuring different protagonists while maintaining the core Outworld invasion concept. "We would still want to use the Outworld invasion concept that we're using for Tides of Annihilation," they explained. The success of the initial title is crucial to realizing this ambitious plan of bringing more mythologies and stories to life.
Currently in its beta phase, Tides of Annihilation is slated for a tentative 2026 release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Players will join Gwendolyn on her quest to save not only London but also the fantastical realm of Avalon, which seems to be merging with the real world.
