Street Fighter 6 Hits 5 Million Sales, Bolstered by Nintendo Switch 2 Release

Capcom reports that Street Fighter 6 has surpassed 5 million units sold, an increase from the 4 million recorded in September 2024. The fighting game’s debut on the Nintendo Switch 2 significantly contributed to this milestone.

Capcom aimed to broaden the game’s audience by launching Street Fighter 6, now in its second year, on the Switch 2. The Switch 2 edition includes exclusive modes tailored for the console and new gameplay features leveraging the Joy-Con 2’s gyro controls. Notably, the Switch 2 version supports crossplay, enhancing matchmaking by connecting players across platforms.

“These efforts have broadened Street Fighter 6’s appeal, driving global sales and helping the game reach the 5 million unit mark,” Capcom stated.

Street Fighter 6 reached 3 million units sold in January 2024, seven months post-launch. Capcom noted that the game is “meeting our expectations overall,” though it had set a goal for the sequel to surpass Street Fighter 5’s lifetime sales of over 10 million units.

“While we don’t disclose specific internal budget figures, our goal is to exceed the performance of Street Fighter 5, targeting over 10 million units throughout the title’s lifespan,” Capcom explained. Street Fighter 6 still has ground to cover to outpace its predecessor’s sales.

For perspective, the 1993 SNES classic Street Fighter 2 Turbo sold 4.1 million copies, the iconic Street Fighter 2 sold 6.3 million, and Street Fighter 5 has reached 7.8 million.

In comparison, rival fighting game Mortal Kombat 1 also hit 5 million units sold since its September 2023 release. Mortal Kombat typically leads as the top-selling fighting game franchise, outpacing Street Fighter and Tekken. However, Mortal Kombat 1’s sales have been considered underwhelming, with developer NetherRealm recently shifting focus to its next project.

Capcom, meanwhile, remains committed to supporting Street Fighter 6 into its third year, recently unveiling four new DLC characters: Sagat, set for release this summer; C. Viper this fall; Alex in early spring 2026; and Ingrid in late spring 2026. The reveal came via a trailer featuring pro wrestler Kenny Omega, who portrayed each DLC character.

IGN’s Street Fighter 6 review scored it a 9/10, stating: “Street Fighter 6 is the most feature-packed entry in the series at launch. Its roster of 18 characters shines, new mechanics refresh the one-on-one fighting formula, and it masters the subtle details that define an exceptional fighting game.”
