In an unexpected twist, a live-action Toys "R" Us movie is in development.

According to Variety, Story Kitchen — the production team behind recent video game adaptations like Sonic the Hedgehog — aims to craft a vibrant, modern adventure that channels the timeless magic of the Toys 'R' Us brand, rooted in its 70-year legacy in the toy industry.

“Toys 'R' Us remains a cherished symbol of childhood wonder,” said Story Kitchen co-founders Dmitri M. Johnson and Mike Goldberg. “As kids of the '80s who saw Toys 'R' Us as a playground of dreams, we’re thrilled to collaborate on a film that embodies the joy, creativity, and nostalgia tied to the brand.”

The film draws inspiration from Night at the Museum, Back to the Future, and Big, alongside toy-centric blockbusters like Barbie. While casting details remain under wraps, the project will be produced by Story Kitchen’s Johnson, Goldberg, Timothy I. Stevenson, and Elena Sandoval, alongside Kim Miller Olko from Toys "R" Us Studios.

“As the first film from Toys "R" Us, this project is a chance to bring our brand’s magic to life on the big screen,” said Miller Olko, president of Toys "R" Us Studios. “This story will spark imagination, adventure, and the boundless joy that defines Toys "R" Us, captivating audiences of all ages.”

Last year, Story Kitchen revealed plans for a Just Cause film adaptation with director Ángel Manuel Soto, alongside projects like Dredge: The Movie, Kingmakers, and Sleeping Dogs.
