Palworld Rival Unveiled Amidst Lawsuit Dilemma

Pocketpair's Surprise Nintendo Switch Release Amidst Legal Battle

Pocketpair, the developer embroiled in a legal dispute, unexpectedly launched its 2019 title, OverDungeon, on the Nintendo eShop. This action card game, blending tower defense and roguelike elements, marks Pocketpair's first Nintendo Switch release. The launch was unannounced, adding to the surprise. To celebrate the Switch debut, OverDungeon is currently 50% off until January 24th.

The company's move comes amidst an ongoing legal battle with Nintendo and The Pokémon Company. In September 2024, these companies filed a lawsuit against Pocketpair, alleging patent infringement related to Palworld's Pal Spheres, which bear resemblance to Pokémon's Poké Balls. Despite this ongoing litigation, Pocketpair released a major update for Palworld in December, boosting its player count. The strategic release of OverDungeon on the Nintendo eShop has sparked speculation online, with some suggesting it's a calculated response to the lawsuit.

OverDungeon's Switch arrival is particularly noteworthy given that Palworld is available on PS5 and Xbox. The decision to debut OverDungeon exclusively on the Nintendo eShop remains unexplained.
