The 500 Rum card game uses a standard 52-card deck plus one joker. In a 2-player game, each player gets 13 cards; in a 3-4 player game, each receives 7 cards.

The objective of 500 Rum is to score the most points by forming sets and sequences (runs) and laying them down. The game continues over rounds until a player reaches 500 points.

Each turn begins when a player draws a card from the stockpile or the discard pile.

If a card is taken from the discard pile, that same card cannot be discarded immediately. Players may draw multiple cards from the discard pile.

Players form sets and sequences (called melds), lay them on the table, and earn points based on the card values in those melds.

Sets consist of cards of the same rank.

Sequences are consecutive cards of the same suit. A joker can act as a wild card.

Players can also add cards to existing melds on the table and score points for doing so.

In 500 Rum, players earn points for cards used in melds or when laying off. Numbered cards (2-10) are worth their face value. Royal cards (J, Q, K) are worth 10 points each. An Ace is worth 15 points, and a joker takes the value of the card it replaces in the meld.

When a player runs out of cards, the round ends. Each player’s total score equals the sum of all melded and laid-off cards, minus the total value of any remaining cards in hand. The player with the highest score wins the round.

Scoring in 500 Rum accumulates over multiple rounds, with each round’s score adding to the player’s total.

The first player to reach or exceed 500 points wins the game. If players are tied, an additional round determines the winner.
