Minecraft Movie Outshines Super Mario Bros. with Record-Breaking Domestic Box Office Debut

Author:Kristen Update:Apr 18,2025

The Minecraft Movie has shattered box office records, surpassing The Super Mario Bros. Movie to claim the title of the biggest domestic debut for a video game adaptation. Starring Jason Momoa and Jack Black, the latter of whom also featured in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, this Xbox game adaptation raked in an impressive $157 million in North America. In comparison, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which still holds the record as the highest-grossing video game adaptation, opened with $146 million domestically back in April 2023.

Globally, A Minecraft Movie added another $144 million from international markets, resulting in a staggering worldwide opening weekend total of $301 million. Given its $150 million production cost before marketing expenses, the film is likely already in the profit zone for Warner Bros.

Based on Mojang's Minecraft, the best-selling video game of all time, A Minecraft Movie capitalizes on the enduring popularity of the Microsoft-owned sandbox game. The film's launch is further enhanced with movie tie-in DLC, providing fans with additional content to enjoy.

IGN rated A Minecraft Movie a 6/10, noting that "Napoleon Dynamite director Jared Hess brings a uniquely humorous and specific comic touch to the kid-friendly adventure, particularly in the less frenetic first half of the film."

For those who have watched the movie, IGN offers an in-depth look at A Minecraft Movie Ending and Post-Credits Scene, featuring insights from Director Jared Hess and Minecraft's Torfi Frans Ólafsson.

In other news, Disney's live-action Snow White is facing potential disaster at the box office following a lackluster opening weekend. It has earned $168.4 million globally, with $77.5 million from domestic markets and $90.9 million internationally. With a hefty $250 million production budget, a miraculous recovery akin to that of Mufasa: The Lion King appears unlikely.
