Microsoft Job Cuts Continue: Report

Microsoft Reportedly Conducts Additional Workforce Reductions Across Multiple Divisions

Tech giant Microsoft has reportedly implemented further staff reductions affecting its gaming, security, and sales departments. While the exact number of affected employees remains undisclosed, these recent measures appear separate from previously announced workforce adjustments made earlier this year.

The gaming sector continues facing significant workforce challenges, with Microsoft joining numerous developers implementing cuts throughout 2024. Impacted studios range from major developers to independent teams, including notable names like IllFonic (Predator: Hunting Grounds) and People Can Fly (Outriders). Rocksteady Studios recently implemented staffing changes following mixed reception of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.

Microsoft's gaming division has seen considerable workforce adjustments since January 2024, beginning with approximately 1,900 positions eliminated across Xbox operations, including newly acquired subsidiaries Activision Blizzard and ZeniMax. Additional reductions occurred in September 2023 affecting 650 corporate and support roles within Activision Blizzard.

Business Insider reports (via GamesIndustry.biz) indicate Microsoft has initiated another round of position eliminations. Company representatives confirmed these latest measures affect limited personnel but declined specifying exact numbers. These adjustments reportedly represent independent actions from earlier 2024 workforce optimizations targeting underperforming areas.

Microsoft's Strategic Workforce Adjustments Continue

These organizational changes occur amidst Microsoft's strategic expansion, following high-profile acquisitions including Bethesda and Activision Blizzard. The company recently achieved a $3 trillion market valuation shortly after its January workforce reductions.

The Federal Trade Commission previously scrutinized Microsoft's personnel decisions regarding Activision Blizzard, examining potential implications for the completed merger. Previous adjustments affected Xbox retail operations, Blizzard customer support teams, and development studios including Sledgehammer Games and Toys for Bob.

Notable casualties included cancellation of Blizzard's anticipated survival project (codenamed Odyssey). The full scope and operational impact of current workforce changes within Xbox operations remain undetermined as Microsoft continues refining its organizational structure.
