GTA 6 Mapping Project Surges with Trailer 2: 'Information Overload'

Author:Kristen Update:May 19,2025

The long-awaited GTA 6 mapping project has surged into high gear following the release of Trailer 2, with one of its key contributors, Garza, telling IGN that "it really changes everything for us for the rest of the year." The GTA 6 Mapping Discord, home to 370 members and soon to reach 400, is abuzz with activity as enthusiasts dive deep into the new trailer to dissect and understand the wealth of details it offers.

"It's an information overload - it really changes everything for us for the rest of the year," Garza, who manages the Discord server, shared with IGN. "We have so much new content to work on and we're really just getting started."

PlayThe GTA 6 Mapping Discord project originated in the wake of the massive September 2022 leaks, which some fans believe were humorously nodded to at the start of Trailer 2. The project's mission is to construct the most accurate map of GTA 6 possible. Prior to Trailer 2, the team relied on the leaks and the information from December 2023's Trailer 1.

The latest iteration of the GTA 6 map, version v0.049, was released by project lead DuPz0r at the end of March but has quickly become outdated with the fresh insights from Trailer 2. This new information is helping to refine and detail the map further.

Rockstar's latest trailer not only confirmed plot points and characters but also released 70 new screenshots, showcasing various explorable locations within the state of Leonida, GTA 6's interpretation of Florida. Confirmed locations include Vice City, a reimagined Miami, the tropical Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and the national landmark Mount Kalaga near the northern border of the state.

The volunteers are meticulously analyzing the trailer to pinpoint the exact locations of all visible elements, aiming to align fictional settings with their real-world inspirations to enhance the accuracy of GTA 6's map. Once completed, DuPz0r plans to release an updated map, offering fans a clearer preview of what to expect when GTA 6 launches in May 2026.

Should Rockstar release additional assets or gameplay footage before then, the mapping team is ready to dive back in. Only upon the game's release will they be able to compare their fan-created map to the actual game and gauge its accuracy.

However, looming over the project is the threat of action from Rockstar's parent company, Take-Two. In March, a modder who developed a playable version of the GTA 6 map within GTA 5 halted their efforts after receiving a takedown notice from Take-Two, a project that was influenced by the GTA 6 mapping initiative.

When asked about the potential for legal action from Take-Two last year, Garza expressed "some mild concern." He explained, "This project has been going on for quite some time with no direct disruption to our community. However, I always keep it into consideration if they intend on communicating with us in the future for any reason. We do not explicitly showcase leaked material in the map, so I do not believe they would take that down in particular. I believe they are aware that this project gathers popularity and interest in the game, since everyone wants to see how the world may look like. This can be one of the reasons why they haven’t done anything, since it’s not too negative. If I were ever in the situation of receiving a cease and desist though, then I would respectfully cease and desist. As we get closer to a precise map, it may be possible to receive that notice in the future."

While we await further developments, stay tuned for more on GTA 6, including all the details we've discovered so far and the emerging fan theories sparked by Trailer 2.
