"Critical Role Game Announcement Imminent, Travis Willingham Says"

The popular Dungeons & Dragons show, Critical Role, is on the cusp of unveiling its inaugural major video game, with CEO Travis Willingham teasing that an announcement could come "any day." During a recent interview with Business Insider, the team shared their ambitious plans for the future. While details about the game's title and its integration into the Critical Role universe remain under wraps, Willingham confirmed that the development team is diligently working on the project.

Willingham, who is not only an actor but also a key figure in Critical Role, highlighted the interactive nature of the upcoming game. "They'll actually be getting their hand on the stick and controlling the outcome of the story, changing what might be possible from not just some of their favorite characters, but new offerings in the world of Exandria," he explained. This suggests that players will have a significant impact on the narrative within the game.

Critical Role, co-founded by Willingham alongside other renowned voice actors such as Liam O'Brien, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, and Matthew Mercer, has evolved from a D&D show into a multifaceted universe. One of its standout projects is the Amazon Prime Video series, Critical Role: The Legend of Vox Machina.

The upcoming video game will complement Critical Role's existing projects without necessarily being directly connected. In a December 2024 interview with Rolling Stone, Willingham mentioned that the team was in the "active pursuit" of creating a Critical Role video game spinoff, nearing the end of a multi-year development journey. The game might explore one of the group's campaigns or introduce an original story within the Critical Role world.

Although initially expected to be announced by the end of 2024 or early 2025, the project's announcement now seems imminent as we progress into the year. Willingham reflected on the team's cautious approach, saying, "Those collaborations we’ve had with various partners have been little toe dips in the pool just to see how it feels. You know, there’s a lot of upheaval in the interactive space right now. And we’ve seen studios sort of bear and weather those strains. It’s trying to become smarter about it and find out how we might fit into that larger ecosystem."

While a release date for the Critical Role video game has yet to be disclosed, fans can look forward to the first details on The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4 in the meantime.
