Mobile premium game updates usually improve optimization or compatibility. However, Capcom's recent update (released an hour ago) for Resident Evil 7 biohazard, Resident Evil 4 Remake, and Resident Evil Village on iOS and iPadOS introduces an online DRM system. This DRM verifies your purchase history upon game launch, checking for ownership of the game and any DLC before accessing the title screen. Rejecting the check immediately closes the game. This means an online connection is now mandatory for launching the games, adding a few seconds of loading time before resuming your saved game. Previously, all three titles were fully playable offline.

Pre-update testing confirmed offline functionality. Post-update, the DRM prompt appears, and refusing the check terminates the game. While some may not be bothered, the addition of this always-online DRM to already-purchased games is highly problematic. Ideally, Capcom should implement a less intrusive purchase verification method, perhaps checking less frequently. This unwelcome change negatively impacts the recommendation of Capcom's premium mobile ports.

If you haven't purchased these titles, free trials are available. You can find Resident Evil 7 biohazard on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS here. Resident Evil 4 Remake is available on the App Store here, and Resident Evil Village here. My reviews can be found here, here, and here.

Do you own these three Resident Evil games on iOS? What are your thoughts on this update?
