Today marks the 10th anniversary of *Bloodborne*, and fans are commemorating the occasion with another "Return to Yharnam" community event. FromSoftware's PlayStation 4 masterpiece, which launched on March 24, 2015, solidified the Japanese developer's reputation as one of the greatest in the industry. The game received widespread critical and commercial success, leading many to anticipate a sequel or remaster akin to the Dark Souls series. However, a decade later, there has been no follow-up, leaving fans puzzled and eager for more.
The absence of a current-gen remaster, a sequel, or even a next-gen update that would enable 60fps gameplay has been a source of frustration for the *Bloodborne* community. Despite continuous requests to Sony, the silence on this front remains one of the most perplexing decisions in the gaming world.
Earlier this year, former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida offered some insight into the situation. In an interview with Kinda Funny Games, Yoshida shared his personal theory, emphasizing that it was not based on insider knowledge. He suggested that Hidetaka Miyazaki, the head of FromSoftware and creator of *Bloodborne*, might be reluctant to let anyone else work on the game due to his deep attachment to it. Yoshida speculated that Miyazaki's busy schedule and success with other projects, including the blockbuster *Elden Ring*, could be factors in the lack of a *Bloodborne* follow-up.
Miyazaki's involvement in subsequent projects like *Dark Souls 3*, *Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice*, and *Elden Ring* has kept him occupied. While he has acknowledged that *Bloodborne* could benefit from modern hardware, he often redirects questions about the game, citing that FromSoftware does not own the IP.
In the absence of official updates, modders have attempted to enhance the *Bloodborne* experience. However, Sony has responded negatively to these efforts. For instance, Lance McDonald, creator of a 60fps mod, received a takedown notice from Sony Interactive Entertainment, and Lilith Walther, behind projects like *Nightmare Kart* and the *Bloodborne PSX demake*, faced a copyright claim on a YouTube video.
Recent advancements in PS4 emulation have allowed fans to experience *Bloodborne* at 60fps on PC, as demonstrated by Digital Foundry's coverage of the ShadPS4 emulator. This development might have prompted Sony's aggressive stance, though the company has not officially commented on the matter.
With no official word from Sony or FromSoftware, *Bloodborne* enthusiasts have taken matters into their own hands, organizing community events like the "Return to Yharnam" initiative. Today's event encourages players to start fresh characters, engage with as many co-op players and invaders as possible, and leave in-game messages to signify their participation in this community-driven celebration.
As fans continue to celebrate and keep the spirit of *Bloodborne* alive, the future of the game remains uncertain, leaving the community to wonder if these events will be the only way to experience the haunting world of Yharnam moving forward.
