EDR "Blackbox" Scan Tool & PDF Accident Reports for Collision Investigators
WHEN INVESTIGATING A VEHICLE COLLISION
Leverage the power of the CrashScan App paired with the OBDLink MX+ Bluetooth adapter to delve into the car's computer modules, including the crucial Event Data Recorder (EDR), commonly referred to as the "blackbox", when the vehicle model supports it (check support details below). CrashScan is designed to assist investigators in flagging, capturing, and interpreting stored data from prior accidents. This crash data is invaluable for validating motor vehicle insurance claims and acts as a lead indicator for liability or questionable collision claims.

PRIVACY LEGISLATION STATUS (EDR DATA)
Canada: There is no specific legislation; EDR data is considered diagnostic and "non-private". However, insurers typically obtain consent as a best practice.
United States: The federal Driver Privacy Act of 2015, enacted in December 2015, imposes limitations on EDR data retrieval and asserts that such information belongs to the vehicle's owner or lessee. Seventeen states have enacted statutes regarding EDR privacy, including Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Washington. These statutes generally stipulate that EDR data can only be downloaded with the consent of the vehicle owner or policyholder, subject to certain exceptions.
