New Patent For Joy-Con Shows Mouse Support

Switch 2 Joy-Con Patent Points to Rumored Mouse Support Function

The eagerly awaited Switch 2 introduces enhanced features to its Joy-Con, notably including mouse support. The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) published a patent on February 6, 2025, detailing Nintendo's innovations for the Switch 2's controllers.

This publication sheds light on the advanced functionalities of the new Joy-Con, emphasizing its ability to operate as a mouse. The concept of the Joy-Con doubling as a mouse gained traction following the Switch 2 reveal trailer, which showcased the controller being used across a flat surface, hinting at its mouse-like capabilities.

The patent essentially confirms these rumors, as Nintendo has remained largely silent on specifics about the Switch 2.

Switch 2 Joy-Con Mouse Function and New Controllers

The Joy-Con for the Switch 2 retains the familiar detachable design from the original Nintendo Switch, allowing both Joy-Cons to be separated from the console. A standout feature revealed in the patent is the Joy-Con's ability to function as a mouse.

According to the patent, "The sensor for mouse operation detects reflected light from a detected surface, the light changing by moving over the detected surface in a state in which either the first side surface or the second side surface is placed on the detected surface."

Moreover, the Joy-Cons can be charged using a new dock that accommodates up to two Joy-Cons simultaneously. A new magnetic attachment connects the Joy-Con to the console and includes a wrist strap, reminiscent of the original Switch's Joy-Con.

The patent also introduces a new pair of controllers, resembling a standard controller split in half, each equipped with an optical sensor on the side. These controllers can also function as a mouse and can be combined into a standard controller with a separate attachment.

It's important to note that the features outlined in the patent may not fully represent the final product for the Switch 2, as Nintendo has yet to make official announcements regarding the Joy-Con's functionalities or other related accessories.
