Sonic Galactic: A Sonic Mania-esque Fan Game

Sonic Galactic, a fan-made game from Starteam, captures the spirit of Sonic Mania, appealing to fans of classic Sonic gameplay and pixel art. The active Sonic fan community continually produces sequels and spin-offs, and Sonic Mania, a 25th-anniversary celebration, remains a fan favorite. While a true sequel never materialized due to Sonic Team's shift away from pixel art and the developers' other projects, Sonic Galactic aims to fill that void.

Developed over four years and initially showcased at the 2020 Sonic Amateur Games Expo, Sonic Galactic imagines a 32-bit Sonic game, reminiscent of a hypothetical Sega Saturn release. It blends classic Genesis-style 2D platforming with unique additions.

The Game's Features:

The second demo, released in early 2025, features the classic trio – Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles – in new zones. Joining them are Fang the Sniper (from Sonic Triple Trouble) and a new character, Tunnel the Mole (inspired by Illusion Island). Each character boasts unique pathways within the levels.

Special stages are heavily inspired by Sonic Mania, presenting 3D ring-collecting challenges against the clock. A typical playthrough takes about an hour to complete Sonic's stages, with additional playtime offered by the other characters' shorter levels, resulting in approximately two hours of total gameplay. The game's pixel art style and faithful recreation of classic Sonic gameplay are sure to resonate with longtime fans.
