While Sonic 3 has outperformed its predecessor, Sonic 2, domestically, it remains significantly behind the top earner: The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The Mario film's staggering domestic gross of $574,934,330 and global total of $1,359,146,628 represent a likely unbeatable record for video game adaptations, though upcoming films like the Minecraft movie and the Super Mario Bros. sequel might challenge it.

Despite this, the success of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is undeniable, a significant win for Paramount, who have already greenlit Sonic 4.
