Master the Art of Parrying in Avowed: A Comprehensive Guide

Parrying in Avowed offers a thrilling counter-attack mechanic, transforming enemy aggression into devastating offensive opportunities. This guide details how to unlock and effectively utilize this crucial skill.

Unlocking the Parry Ability

Before you can parry, you must unlock the ability. Navigate to the "Abilities" menu, then select the "Ranger" tab. The Parry ability is located in the top middle column. Unlocking requires allocating an Ability point to any of the three core skill trees. Three ranks of Parry exist:

Rank Player Level Requirement Description
1 N/A (1 Point Spent) Unlocks the Parry ability.
2 Player Level 5 Increases Parry efficiency by 25%, enhancing stun.
3 Player Level 8 Increases Parry efficiency by 50%, enhancing stun.

At level 10, the "Arrow Deflection" ability unlocks, allowing you to parry projectiles.

Executing a Parry

A critical moment before a potentially unfortunate encounter with bears.

Parrying requires precise timing: block immediately before an enemy attack connects. A metallic clang and a visual cue confirm a successful parry, staggering the opponent. Mastering the timing takes practice, but it's less demanding than in games like Dark Souls or Elden Ring.

Limitations of Parrying

Not all attacks are parryable. Attacks indicated by a red circle require dodging. Furthermore, only certain weapons allow parrying: single-handed, two-handed weapons (excluding off-hand use), and shields (in the off-hand). Ranged weapons (guns, wands, bows) and grimoires cannot parry.

Benefits of Parrying

Parrying stuns attackers, creating openings for significant damage. It's particularly effective for melee characters engaging in close-quarters combat. However, ranged-focused builds may find less utility in this ability. Avowed's respec system allows easy removal of the Parry ability if needed.
