Author:Kristen Update:May 18,2025

Sega's iconic arcade racing game, OutRun, is set to hit the big screen in a surprise movie adaptation, with Michael Bay, renowned for his work on the Transformers series, stepping into the director's chair and also serving as a producer. Sydney Sweeney, known for her dynamic performances, is also attached to the project as a producer. The screenplay will be penned by Jayson Rothwell, although plot details remain under wraps and no release date has been announced yet.

On the Sega front, the project will be overseen by Toru Nakahara, a producer who contributed to the successful Sonic movies, and Shuji Utsumi, CEO of Sega America and Europe. OutRun, originally launched in 1986 and designed by the legendary Yu Suzuki, has been a staple in arcade culture with numerous versions and ports over the years. The last notable release was OutRun Online Arcade in 2009 by Sumo Digital, and while the franchise has been relatively quiet, Sega is now looking to revitalize its classic titles.

Sega has been actively exploring its back catalogue for new projects, with fresh installments of Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Golden Axe, Virtua Fighter, and Shinobi currently in development. Additionally, Sega has successfully ventured into film and television adaptations of its intellectual properties, with the Sonic movies achieving significant popularity and the recent Like a Dragon: Yakuza series on Amazon. The trend of video game adaptations continues to grow, as evidenced by the blockbuster success of films like The Super Mario Bros. Movie and the anticipated A Minecraft Movie.

While specifics about the OutRun film are scarce, fans might speculate a thrilling, high-speed narrative akin to the Fast & Furious franchise, given Michael Bay's directorial style and the game's inherent focus on driving and action.
