A New Dawn for Osiris: Weighing the Mass Effect Legacy

Author:Kristen Update:Jan 05,2026

The upcoming game The Expanse: Osiris Reborn bears such a striking resemblance to Mass Effect that many are already dubbing it Mass Effect: The Expanse. Both the debut trailer and known gameplay details make the parallels clear—and to their credit, the developers at Owlcat Games aren’t shy about their influences.

In a conversation with IGN, creative director Alexander Mishulin and head of publishing Andrey Tsvetkov acknowledged the impact BioWare’s sci-fi series has had on The Expanse: Osiris Reborn. However, they emphasize that the game brings more to the table than pure imitation.

For followers of The Expanse universe, Osiris Reborn offers fresh narrative territory, with several actors from the beloved Prime Video series returning to reprise their roles. While Owlcat remains tight-lipped about exactly who will appear (we tried to find out!), fans can at least look forward to continuing the story after the show concluded in 2022.

Personally, my excitement for The Expanse: Osiris Reborn runs even deeper. As someone who loves Mass Effect, The Expanse, and Owlcat’s own Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader—which stands out not only among recent Warhammer titles but as a top-tier cRPG—this project feels particularly compelling.

Could Osiris Reborn be the perfect intersection of Mass Effect, The Expanse, and Warhammer 40,000? Read on to uncover just how much The Expanse: Osiris Reborn channels the spirit of Mass Effect.
