Nintendo vows action against Switch 2 scalpers

Switch 2 release strategies discussed

Nintendo has confirmed its readiness to prevent shortages and combat scalpers during the Switch 2 launch, stating: "We are making preparations."

During discussions following Nintendo's recent financial results, president Shuntaro Furukawa addressed the company's strategy to avoid the supply issues that plagued the original Switch's 2017 launch.

"We'll implement all necessary measures based on our past experiences dealing with scalpers and similar challenges," Furukawa told Nikkei (translated by VGC). "We're taking comprehensive preparations."

Are you planning on getting a Switch 2?

  • Yes, on day 1!
  • Nope, I'm content with my current setup
  • I'll wait for more details about games and specifications

These preparations likely involve mass production of Switch 2 consoles. Last year, Nintendo emphasized that manufacturing sufficient units would be crucial in preventing scalper activity.

The original Switch faced severe shortages upon its March 2017 release, creating opportunities for scalpers to sell consoles at inflated prices. Furukawa clarified in July 2024 that the Switch successor launch would handle supply differently.

"Our primary anti-scalping measure remains ensuring production meets consumer demand - a principle unchanged since last year," Furukawa explained.

"We're also evaluating additional lawful measures suitable for each regional market."

He added: "While semiconductor shortages previously hindered Switch production, this issue has been resolved. Component shortages shouldn't significantly impact manufacturing of our next-generation console."

Nintendo confirmed a Switch 2 Direct presentation scheduled for April 2nd, alongside global hands-on events in major cities.

During his February 4th, 2025 statement, Furukawa also addressed declining Switch sales, dismissing speculation that consumers were waiting for Switch 2.

"We don't believe purchase hesitation significantly affects current sales," Furukawa stated. "Our eighth year remains strong, though below projections."

The executive confirmed ongoing Switch support post-Switch 2 launch, noting planned 2025 releases including Pokémon Legends: Z-A and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond.
