Nintendo Confirms Switch 2 GameCube Controller Compatibility, Warns of Potential Issues

Nintendo has provided clarity on the compatibility of its newly announced GameCube controller with the Nintendo Switch 2, highlighting potential "issues" when using it to play modern games on the new console. The controller, which was introduced during the 60-minute Nintendo Direct earlier this month, comes with a caveat in the fine print that it's primarily designed for the Nintendo Switch Online retro library's GameCube games, not for other Switch 2 titles.

In a recent statement to Nintendo Life, Nintendo emphasized that the GameCube controller is crafted with the "Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics" collection in mind. While it might be possible to use the controller with other Nintendo Switch 2 games, players could encounter some limitations due to the absence of certain buttons and features that are standard in newer controllers.

Nintendo reiterated that the GameCube controller is exclusively compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2 system and not with the original Nintendo Switch. "The Nintendo GameCube controller is designed for use with the Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics collection of games and is an optional way to play those games," the company stated, adding that its use with other Switch 2 games may lead to issues.

The introduction of the GameCube collection marks a significant enhancement to the Nintendo Switch Online library, offering subscribers access to a wide array of classic titles from the early 2000s. Launch titles include fan favorites like The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, and Soulcalibur 2.
