Nintendo: Mario and Peach Are 'Good Friends'

Author:Kristen Update:Mar 12,2026

Ever have one of those days that starts out completely normal, only to spiral into a reality-questioning revelation? That's exactly how my morning went. I sat down to work, opened my phone, and saw a post claiming Mario and Peach are simply "good friends"—not whatever I, and probably you, assumed their relationship to be.

This eyebrow-raising tidbit comes directly from the Nintendo Today app. The original post has since rotated out due to the app's regular content updates, but it's been preserved across social media. Twitter user @KirPinkFury was among the first to share it online. The post featured a Princess Peach profile containing that now-famous line: "Princess Peach and Mario are good friends and help each other out whenever they can." Just good friends? What about all those times we clearly saw them kiss?

"Hold on," you might argue, "they can be good friends and also be in a relationship. Being friends with your partner is important." And yes, that's absolutely true. But how often do people describe their romantic partner as their "good friend"? I certainly don’t introduce my husband that way—it would confuse everyone, including him! The only logical explanation is that Nintendo is deliberately downplaying Mario and Peach’s previous, very explicit romantic history.

To be fair, Nintendo's stance on their relationship has always been inconsistent. Peach has been called Mario's "special someone." They've been shown sharing clear romantic moments on numerous occasions. Nintendo's own Yoshiaki Koizumi once stated in an interview that Mario "carries a torch" for Peach. The company even featured them as a Valentine's Day couple, complete with pink hearts, at least once. And let's not forget Mario's marriage proposal at the end of Super Mario Odyssey. Yes, Peach turned him down—but she had just survived a kidnapping and forced marriage plot by Bowser. If my boyfriend proposed right after that kind of trauma, I’d probably need some space, too.

But fine, I guess they're just friends now. Just like Link and Zelda, who totally live together and definitely don’t share a bed. Next thing you know, they’ll try to tell us nothing’s going on between all those Fire Emblem characters, either.
