Hideo Kojima, director of Death Stranding, announced that an anime adaptation of the acclaimed game is currently in development. Discover more about his vision for game-to-film adaptations and the latest promotions for Death Stranding 2.

While a live-action Death Stranding film has been in development, creator Hideo Kojima recently disclosed that an anime adaptation is also in progress. In a May 28 interview with Vogue Japan, Kojima discussed the upcoming film and casually mentioned the anime project.
He emphasized that the future of entertainment lies in blending video games and films seamlessly, a core mission for his company. Kojima explained, "After establishing the Death Stranding IP across various platforms and producing a film and sequel, our next phase is to craft a work that erases the divide between games and cinema entirely."

Discussing game-to-film adaptations, Kojima referenced "The Last of Us," which stayed true to its source material, and "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," designed as fan-focused entertainment. While acknowledging their strengths, he aims to create a film worthy of accolades at prestigious events like Cannes or Venice. He added, "We are actively developing an anime adaptation as well."
Although Kojima hinted at an anime possibility in a September 2024 Variety interview, this marks the first official confirmation from Kojima Productions. No further details about the project have been shared yet.
Summer Game Fest (SGF) announced via Twitter (X) on May 27 that Hideo Kojima will present on June 6 at 2:00 PM PT / 5:00 PM ET / 9:00 PM GMT / 6:00 AM JST. The event will stream live on SGF’s official YouTube, Twitch, Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter (X) channels.
Fans anticipate updates on Death Stranding 2 (DS2), though Kojima may also discuss other projects like OD and Physint. The focus, however, appears to be on DS2, with recent promotional efforts including a QR code campaign to build excitement.
Fans on Reddit recently spotted a new QR code from Kojima Productions, linking to a video on the game’s official website. User soldier_ibra noted that the studio launched a Pocket Tissue campaign in Japan, distributing tissues with QR codes to engage fans.
On May 23, Kojima tweeted about personally handing out these tissues on Tokyo streets. The video, titled "Prepper Awaiting Porter," is a brief glimpse inside a Prepper Shelter, deliberately understated in classic Kojima style. Fans expect more promotional content as the game approaches its release.
As Death Stranding 2: On The Beach nears its June 26, 2025, launch on PlayStation 5, Kojima is ramping up promotion for the highly anticipated sequel. Stay informed with the latest updates in our Death Stranding 2: On The Beach article below!
