Exclusive: Sonic the Hedgehog Speeds Into New Magic: The Gathering Crossover

Magic: The Gathering has seen numerous Secret Lair crossovers this year, from SpongeBob to Deadpool, and another is arriving next month. Sonic the Hedgehog is getting three separate Secret Lair drops, and we have the first exclusive look at one focused on artifacts.

Unlike the recent Final Fantasy crossover, which launched as a full draftable Magic set with four pre-constructed Commander decks, this Sonic collaboration follows the familiar Secret Lair model: just three limited drops. Secret Lair refers to Magic’s timed releases featuring a small selection of cards with unique artwork, sold directly by Wizards of the Coast rather than in randomized boosters.

For this drop, six existing Magic cards have been reimagined with new Sonic-themed art and names, plus one token card. It includes key staples from Commander, like Swiftfoot Boots and Lightning Greaves — because Sonic’s shoes absolutely deserve their own cards. Also noteworthy: the legendary vehicle Weatherlight appears here as Tornado, Sonic’s Biplane. Thanks to a recent rules update, you can now make it your Commander if you choose.

PlayWOTC says this drop is designed to pair with another release centered on Sonic’s characters. While we don’t yet have details on those, the Turbo Gear store page gives an example: equipping The Reaver Cleaver — reimagined as Knuckles’s Gloves — to Knuckles himself. This mirrors past crossovers like 2023’s Tomb Raider, where reprinted cards were crafted to complement new Legendary creatures, almost like a mini “build your own Commander deck” starter kit.

The Turbo Gear Secret Lair drop — along with the other two — launches on July 14 at 9am PT on the official Secret Lair website. It will cost $29.99 for the non-foil version or $39.99 for foil. Be sure to act fast, as these will be available in limited quantities — and based on recent crossovers, they’re likely to sell out quickly.
