ByteDance Shifts US Publishing to Skystone in Major Overhaul

Author:Kristen Update:Apr 19,2025

Earlier this year, the mobile gaming community was rocked by news that ByteDance, the company behind TikTok, would no longer publish several top-tier games in the US. Titles like Marvel Snap and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang were abruptly pulled from app stores due to political pressure aimed at ByteDance. This move was part of a broader push to force ByteDance to divest from its social media platform, TikTok.

While TikTok has since returned to the app stores, many of the games affected by the initial ban did not see such a swift reinstatement. Marvel Snap, for example, quickly sought out a new publisher and found one in Skystone Games. Skystone has now taken over the publishing rights for virtually all of ByteDance's US-published games, promising to release US-specific versions of these titles.

For the average player, this transition to Skystone Games means continuity in gameplay, either through continued access to their favorite games or through new, region-specific versions. However, the underlying issue of games being caught in political crossfires remains a concern. The fact that our favorite mobile games can be treated as political pawns is unsettling for both players and developers alike.

As the deadline for a potential TikTok sale approaches, the mobile gaming industry watches closely. The handling of such political maneuvers could have significant repercussions for other games published by companies under similar scrutiny. The situation with ByteDance and its games serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of app availability in the face of political decisions.
