Baldur's Gate 3 Patch 7: A Million Mods and Counting!

The highly anticipated Patch 7 for Baldur's Gate 3 has arrived, and the player response has been phenomenal, especially regarding the sheer volume of mods.

Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke announced on X (formerly Twitter) that over one million mods were installed within 24 hours of Patch 7's September 5th release. "Modding is pretty big," he stated. This figure was later surpassed, with mod.io founder Scott Reismanis reporting over 3 million installs and counting.

This surge in mod usage is largely due to Patch 7's inclusion of Larian's own built-in Mod Manager. This streamlined tool allows players to easily browse, install, and manage mods without leaving the game. The previously available modding tools, accessible via Steam, utilize Larian's Osiris scripting language, enabling modders to create custom stories, scripts, and even perform basic debugging.

Furthermore, a community-created "BG3 Toolkit Unlocked" (by modder Siegfre on Nexus) has emerged, offering a full level editor and reactivating previously restricted features in Larian's editor. This expands modding capabilities beyond what Larian initially intended to publicly release. While Larian prioritizes game development over tool creation, they acknowledge the significant creative freedom players enjoy.

Cross-Platform Modding on the Horizon

Larian Studios is actively developing cross-platform modding support, a significant undertaking given the complexities of compatibility across PC and consoles. Vincke confirmed that PC support will launch first, followed by console support after addressing potential issues and navigating platform submission processes.

Beyond the modding boom, Patch 7 delivers a wealth of improvements: enhanced UI, new animations, expanded dialogue options, bug fixes, and performance optimizations. With further updates planned, the future of Baldur's Gate 3 modding looks incredibly bright.
