VoiceTra is an innovative speech translation application designed to facilitate communication across different languages, particularly useful for travelers and those welcoming visitors to Japan. This free-to-download app supports 31 languages and features an intuitive interface that allows users to verify the accuracy of translations.

Key Features:

VoiceTra leverages advanced speech recognition, translation, and speech synthesis technologies developed by the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT). The app translates your spoken phrases into various languages and delivers the results via synthesized voice. The translation direction can be switched instantly, enabling two people who speak different languages to communicate using just one device. For languages that do not support speech input, text input is also available.

VoiceTra is ideally suited for travel-related conversations, making it perfect for scenarios such as:

• Transportation: Buses, trains, rental cars, taxis, airports, and transit systems.
• Shopping: Restaurants, shopping experiences, and payment transactions.
• Hotel: Check-ins, check-outs, and cancellations.

Restrictions and Considerations:

• An internet connection is required to use VoiceTra.
• Translation results may be delayed depending on network connectivity.
• Text input is supported for languages that the OS keyboard supports.
• Proper display of characters depends on the installed fonts on your device.
• The app or some of its functions may be unavailable if the server is down.
• Users are responsible for any communication fees, including potentially high international data roaming charges.
• Developed for research purposes, VoiceTra uses servers set up for research, and data collected is used to enhance speech translation technologies.
• While the app can be tested for business use, for continuous use, consider private services licensed by NICT.
