In these puzzles, you color or leave blank cells in a grid according to numbers at the side, revealing a hidden picture. These numbers serve as a form of discrete tomography, indicating the number of unbroken lines of filled-in squares in any given row or column. For instance, a clue like "4 8 3" signifies sets of four, eight, and three filled squares, in that order, with at least one blank square between successive groups.

Solving a nonogram requires you to determine which cells should be boxes and which should remain empty. Marking spaces is just as crucial as filling boxes, as these spaces later help in understanding where a clue may extend. Solvers often use a dot or a cross to mark cells they are certain are spaces.
