Xbox Revives Friend Requests: A Decade-Long Wait Ends!
Responding to years of player requests, Xbox has reinstated the friend request system, marking a significant change to its social features. This much-anticipated return brings back the familiar functionality of sending, accepting, and declining friend requests, offering users greater control over their online connections.
A Two-Way Street: More Control, More Flexibility
Xbox Senior Product Manager Klarke Clayton announced the news, emphasizing the shift from the previous "follow" system to a more traditional friend request model. "We’re thrilled to announce the return of friend requests," Clayton stated. "Friends are now a two-way, invite-approved relationship, giving you more control and flexibility." This functionality will be accessible via the People tab on Xbox consoles.
The previous "follow" system, while fostering an open social environment, lacked the direct connection and control that friend requests provide. Many players felt overwhelmed by a large number of followers without a clear way to distinguish genuine connections.
The "follow" feature will remain, allowing users to follow content creators or communities without reciprocal approval. Existing friends and followers will be automatically categorized under the new system.
Privacy and Customization
Microsoft prioritizes user privacy. The updated system includes enhanced privacy and notification settings, allowing users to manage who can send friend requests, who can follow them, and which notifications they receive. These settings are accessible through the Xbox settings menu.
Positive Reception and Anticipation
The announcement has been met with enthusiastic responses on social media. Players are celebrating the return of a feature many had long since given up on. While some players were even unaware the feature was missing, the overwhelming positive response highlights the importance of this change for many Xbox users.
Rollout and Xbox Insiders
While a precise release date for the full rollout hasn't been announced, Xbox Insiders on consoles and PC can access the feature starting this week. Xbox's tweet promises more details on the full release later this year. Joining the Xbox Insiders program offers early access to the revived friend request system.
