Excitement stirred among fans when Nintendo announced during their April 2 Nintendo Direct for Switch 2 that the original GameCube version of Wind Waker would be making its way to the new console. This news sparked curiosity about the fate of Wind Waker HD, the enhanced version previously released for the Wii U.

Nintendo of America's Senior Vice President of Product Development, Nate Bihldorff, shed light on the situation. In a conversation captured by Kinda Funny Games Daily on April 9, host Tim Gettys shared that during a Switch 2 press event in New York, he directly asked Bihldorff about the possibility of a Wind Waker HD port. Bihldorff responded affirmatively, stating, "no, all options are on the table," indicating that a port of Wind Waker HD to the Switch 2 remains a possibility, though nothing has been confirmed yet.

First Released in 2002

Originally launched on the GameCube in 2002 in Japan and 2003 in the West, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker quickly became a fan favorite. A decade later, in 2013, it was reimagined as Wind Waker HD for the Wii U, boasting significant upgrades. These enhancements included a jump from 480p to high-definition visuals, improved lighting effects, gyro controls for weapons, quicker sailing, and various other gameplay refinements. With the GameCube library now exclusive to the Switch 2, a port of Wind Waker HD could be the only way for original Switch owners to experience this updated version.

In related news, Nintendo has rebranded their classic game libraries on the Nintendo Switch Online service to "Nintendo Classics." Members of the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack will soon have access to play The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-ZERO GX, and SOULCALIBUR II on the Nintendo Switch 2, with promises of more games to come. These classics will also feature additional in-game options such as a retro screen filter and widescreen gameplay, enhancing the nostalgic experience for players.
