PlayStation's 30th-anniversary celebration concluded with a bang, featuring the acclaimed PS4 exclusive, Bloodborne, in its commemorative trailer. The inclusion of Bloodborne, accompanied by the caption "It's about persistence," has reignited fervent speculation among fans regarding a potential Bloodborne remaster, sequel, or remake.
The trailer, set to a unique rendition of The Cranberries' "Dreams," showcased a selection of PlayStation's most iconic titles, including Ghost of Tsushima, God of War, and Helldivers 2. Each game featured a thematic caption; however, Bloodborne's placement and caption sparked significant online buzz.
While no concrete information supports the rumors, the persistent speculation highlights the game's enduring popularity and fans' desire for a return to Yharnam. This isn't the first time such speculation has surfaced; a previous Instagram post by PlayStation Italia featuring Bloodborne imagery also fueled similar excitement.
The anniversary trailer's ending might simply acknowledge Bloodborne's notorious difficulty, emphasizing the persistence required to conquer its challenges. However, the timing and context have undeniably fueled fan hopes.
To commemorate its anniversary, Sony released a PS5 update offering a limited-time PS1 boot-up sequence and customizable themes inspired by past PlayStation consoles. This update allows players to personalize their home screen's appearance and sound effects, drawing from the nostalgic aesthetics of previous generations.
The ability to customize the PS5 UI with themes from PS1 to PS4 has been well-received, although the limited-time nature of the update has drawn some criticism. This update is speculated by some to be a test for future, more comprehensive UI customization options on the PS5.
Adding to the wave of speculation, Digital Foundry corroborated Bloomberg's report of Sony developing a handheld console for PS5 games. While still in its early stages, this move suggests Sony's intent to compete in the portable gaming market currently dominated by Nintendo Switch.
The panelists at Digital Foundry highlighted the strategic sense of both Microsoft and Sony entering the handheld market, given the rise of mobile gaming. However, while Microsoft has been more open about its handheld ambitions, Sony remains tight-lipped. The development and release of both companies’ handheld consoles are expected to take several years.
Meanwhile, Nintendo, already a leader in the portable gaming space, announced plans to unveil more information about the Nintendo Switch's successor within its current fiscal year.
