"TownsFolk Unveils Major Update with New Mechanics, Structures, and Compendium"

Author:Kristen Update:May 23,2025

Short Circuit Studio has recently announced an exciting new update for their newly launched settlement builder, TownsFolk. Dubbed "Shadows and Fortune," this update perfectly complements the game's charming pixel-art aesthetic with a darker tone, introducing a wealth of new mechanics to enhance the gameplay experience.

Even though TownsFolk is fresh on the scene, the developers are not holding back on adding depth and complexity. The "Shadows and Fortune" update introduces new challenges and buildings, keeping players engaged and on their toes. Among the new additions are roaming Barbarians, which will ramp up the tension in both campaign missions and Skirmish mode. Additionally, eight new structures are being added, including the Altar, Town Square, Blacksmith, Aqueduct, Bank, Granary, Factory, and Terraformer, each bringing unique benefits and strategic opportunities to your settlement.

The update also brings life to the water tiles with the introduction of the rare Whale, adding an element of surprise and delight to your aquatic explorations. Special Locations are another highlight, with ancient Obelisks and new Shipwrecks scattered across the map, each holding secrets and challenges that contribute to the game's unpredictability.

To help players navigate this expanded world, a new Compendium feature acts as an in-game encyclopedia, keeping track of all the new elements introduced. The Exploration System has been revamped, and players can now adjust Campaign Difficulties between Frontier and Survival modes, allowing for a more tailored gaming experience.
