The video game movie genre is notorious for producing more than its fair share of flops. Films like the 1993 Super Mario Bros. and 1997's Mortal Kombat: Annihilation have become infamous for their poor quality and failure to capture the essence of the original games. Fortunately, Hollywood has shown signs of improvement in recent years, with successes like the Sonic the Hedgehog series and The Super Mario Bros. Movie paving a more promising path. Yet, not all attempts have been successful, as evidenced by the disappointing Borderlands adaptation.
