The excitement is building as the Nintendo GameCube is set to join the Nintendo Switch Online service with the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2. Alongside this, a classic GameCube controller is on its way, promising to bring a nostalgic touch to your gaming experience. However, a closer look at the fine print suggests that this new GameCube controller for the Switch 2 might be exclusively designed for playing GameCube games.
In the UK version of the Switch 2 GameCube controller trailer, a statement clarifies: "The controller is only compatible with Nintendo GameCube - Nintendo Classics." This implies that the GameCube controller is intended solely for use with GameCube games available through the Switch 2 Online Expansion Pack, and may not be compatible with other Switch 2 titles.
However, as noted by VGC, past experiences with Nintendo controllers bearing similar disclaimers have shown that they can sometimes be used beyond their stated limitations. Interestingly, this disclaimer is absent from the Nintendo of America version of the trailer. Given the GameCube controller's ample button layout, it's well-suited for many common gameplay inputs on the Switch 2, which might lead to some creative uses by players.
Even if the new GameCube controller doesn't meet your needs, Nintendo has confirmed that the existing GameCube Controller adapter will be compatible with the Switch 2 dock via a USB port. This is great news for those who have held onto their adapters from the Wii U era, as they'll continue to get plenty of use.
The classic GameCube controller for the Nintendo Switch 2 is slated to be available at the console's launch, though specific pre-order dates have yet to be announced. The pre-order process has been somewhat uncertain due to U.S. tariffs causing disruptions.
This major update to the Nintendo Switch Online library will provide subscribers with access to a host of classic titles from the 2000s, including fan favorites like The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, and Soulcalibur 2, all available at launch this summer. The library is set to grow over time, with teased additions such as Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion, Super Mario Strikers, Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness, and more.
For those eager to pre-order the Nintendo Switch 2, the GameCube controller, or other accessories and games, be sure to check our Nintendo Switch 2 pre-order hub regularly for the latest updates and information.
