"Super Mario World: Sequel Title Revealed and Retracted by NBCUniversal"

Author:Kristen Update:May 26,2025

It seems we might have an early glimpse into the title of the sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie, thanks to a premature reveal in an NBCUniversal press release. The document, which was intended to highlight the offerings of their Upfront Showcase, inadvertently mentioned Super Mario World as one of the upcoming films set to be released by Universal Pictures and Illumination on their streaming service, Peacock.

This slip-up quickly caught the attention of internet sleuths, leading to a swift revision of the press release by Universal, which scrubbed all references to Mario. The initial leak was shared widely on social media, with gaming news outlets like Wario64 tweeting about the now-removed mention:

The original paragraph in the NBCUniversal press release grouped Super Mario World alongside Shrek and Minions. While we know that the next films in those franchises are Shrek 5 and Minions 3, respectively, it's possible that Super Mario World might not be the final title for the Mario sequel but rather a placeholder or an umbrella term. This is similar to how the next Shrek movie isn't simply titled Shrek, and the next Minions movie isn't just called Minions.

However, Super Mario World stands out as a more specific title compared to a generic Super Mario or Super Mario Bros.. This specificity lends credence to the speculation that Super Mario World could indeed be the title for the next Mario movie, aligning well with the franchise's history and fan expectations.
