Street Fighter Reboot: New Director Announced

Author:Kristen Update:Mar 14,2025

Legendary Entertainment's new Street Fighter movie has found its director: Kitao Sakurai, the creative force behind the wildly popular and absurd The Eric Andre Show. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sakurai will helm this latest adaptation, with Capcom deeply involved in the process. The film is already slated for release on March 20, 2026.

This isn't the first time Street Fighter has graced the silver screen; the 1994 adaptation starring Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile, Ming-Na Wen as Chun-Li, and the late Raul Julia as M. Bison remains a cult classic, despite mixed critical reception at the time.

While casting details are still under wraps, fans can anticipate seeing their favorite Street Fighter characters brought to life. Interestingly, this project initially had Danny and Michael Philippou (directors of Talk to Me) attached, but they left last summer. Sakurai's involvement suggests a potential shift towards a more absurdist, perhaps even cartoonish, tone – a direction that many fans, myself included, find appealing, given the game's inherent over-the-top style.

In the meantime, you can experience the latest installment in the franchise, Street Fighter 6, which recently introduced the popular Mai Shiranui. Read our full review here [ttpp].
