Squid Game Star Teases Potential Season 3 Renewal

Squid Game Season 3 is being promoted as the grand finale of the series, culminating in a final confrontation between Player 456 and the Front Man. But is this truly the end of Netflix's most successful show ever, or could the Squid Game universe expand further in the future?

Earlier this month, Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk indicated that while Season 3 concludes the story he originally envisioned, there is potential for a spin-off exploring the "three-year gap between Season 1 and 2."

Now, Squid Game star Lee Byung-hun, who portrays the masked Front Man, has also hinted that the show's third season may not be the franchise's final chapter.

"Director Hwang keeps calling it a finale, but when I first read the script, I thought it could be an ending—yet also a fresh beginning," Byung-hun teased, as reported by The Gamer.

Is Byung-hun implying the games might continue beyond the main storyline? Or that more stories await the surviving players? Fans have noticed a Season 3 teaser that appears to show Squid Games being played in another location. Could the South Korean version be just one branch of a larger, international Squid Game organization—a concept ripe for a spin-off?

"This is just my personal view," Byung-hun said, "but if fan enthusiasm and support remain strong, anything could happen."

For now, however, creator Hwang has expressed a desire to take a break—especially after enduring significant stress during production, which included losing teeth and filming Seasons 2 and 3 consecutively.

"This is the finale for the entire series—the complete story," said Hwang. "It's time to say goodbye."

But will Netflix agree? Given the show's massive viewership, it's easy to imagine the streaming platform wanting to further capitalize on the Squid Game universe. Of course, much depends on how audiences respond to Season 3, which premieres this week on June 27, 2025.
