Sony to Remove PS4 Games from PlayStation Plus in 2024

Author:Kristen Update:May 16,2025

Sony is set to transition away from PlayStation 4 games in its PlayStation Plus Essentials monthly games and the Games Catalog, with the change taking effect in January 2026. This strategic shift will see the company focusing exclusively on PlayStation 5 titles to better cater to its growing PS5 user base.

The announcement was made alongside the reveal of February 2025's monthly game lineup in a recent PlayStation Blog post. Sony stated, "As we shift to PS5, PS4 games will no longer be a key benefit and will only be occasionally offered for PlayStation Plus Monthly Games and Game Catalog." This change won't impact the PS4 games subscribers have already claimed; however, PS4 titles in the Games Catalog will remain playable until they are rotated out of the service during regular updates.

Sony is committed to enhancing the PlayStation Plus experience, promising to refine the benefits available to subscribers. These include exclusive discounts, access to online multiplayer, and online game save storage. The company emphasized its dedication to delivering new PS5 titles on a monthly basis, aligning with the evolving preferences of its player community.

The PlayStation 4, launched in 2013, has been succeeded by the PlayStation 5, which debuted in 2020. With over a decade since the PS4's release and more than four years since the PS5's launch, Sony has observed a significant shift among its players towards PS5 titles.

It remains uncertain whether Sony will reclassify PS4 games into the Classics Catalog, which currently features ports and remasters from PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation 3. Any updates on this front are expected to be shared closer to the implementation date.
